Flying to Saudi Arabia: A Detailed Guide

Getting the flight right is about far more than finding the cheapest fare on a comparison site. Route, connection time, baggage allowance and which Saudi airport you land at all affect how comfortable your journey is and how much ground transport you will need once you arrive. As IATA-accredited agents we book directly with the airlines' own reservation systems, which gives us access to fares and seat availability that are not always visible to the public.

UK departure airports

We regularly book departures from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Leeds Bradford, among others. London routes tend to have the widest choice of airlines and the most direct options, while regional departures more often route through a Gulf or European hub, adding a connection but frequently saving on the fare and cutting out a long domestic transfer to London beforehand.

If you live close to a regional airport, it is always worth asking us to compare the total door-to-door time and cost of flying direct from London against flying locally with one stop — the regional option is often more convenient once you account for getting to and from the airport.

Direct versus indirect flights to Jeddah and Madinah

Saudia and British Airways operate direct flights from London to Jeddah, and Saudia also flies direct to Madinah on a more limited schedule, particularly useful for pilgrims wanting to begin their trip in Madinah before travelling on to Makkah. Direct flights save several hours of total journey time and remove the risk of a missed connection, but they are usually priced at a premium and offer fewer daily departure options.

Indirect routings with Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi or Turkish Airlines via Istanbul often bring the fare down noticeably and add the flexibility of an extra stopover city, at the cost of a longer total travel time and an additional security check at the connecting airport.

Open-jaw routings: flying into one city, out of another

One of the most useful things we arrange is an open-jaw itinerary — flying into Madinah and out of Jeddah, or vice versa — so you never have to backtrack across the country by road. This is particularly popular for pilgrims who want to perform Umrah in Makkah first and spend their final days in the peace of Madinah before flying home, or the reverse for those who prefer to arrive at the Prophet's Mosque first.

Baggage allowances and what to expect

  • Most long-haul fares to Saudi Arabia include one hold bag of 23kg and a cabin bag, though allowances vary by airline and fare class
  • Extra baggage for Zamzam water on the return leg is a common requirement — several airlines allow a designated Zamzam allowance of around 5-10kg in addition to standard baggage, which we will confirm for your specific airline
  • Ihram garments and prayer items are best carried in hand luggage in case hold baggage is delayed
  • Group bookings can sometimes negotiate an additional baggage allowance, which we will always ask for on your behalf

Connection times and comfort

When booking an indirect flight, connection time matters as much as total journey time. A connection under 90 minutes can feel rushed, particularly for elderly travellers or families with children and pushchairs, while a connection of two to four hours gives a comfortable buffer without turning into a long, tiring wait. We build this into every itinerary we quote rather than simply selecting the cheapest combination available.

Flight-only versus package bookings

We are happy to book flights on their own for pilgrims who already have hotels and transport arranged independently, though most pilgrims find better overall value — and stronger consumer protection — by bundling flights with hotels and visa processing into a single ATOL-protected package. When flights are booked as part of a package, any schedule change is managed by us on your behalf rather than left for you to resolve directly with the airline.

Seasonal pricing and when to book

Fares to Jeddah and Madinah move significantly with the Islamic calendar. Ramadan and the weeks either side of it, along with the Dhul Hijjah period around Hajj, see the highest demand and the highest prices, sometimes booked out months in advance. Outside of these peaks, fares are considerably more stable, and booking eight to twelve weeks ahead generally gives the best balance of price and flight choice.

How we find your fare

Tell us your preferred UK airport, your travel dates or the flexibility around them, and how many people are travelling. We will check fares across Saudia, British Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Etihad, and come back with a small number of realistic options rather than an overwhelming list — including the trade-offs in price, timing and connection quality for each.
